New York VRML
Special Interest Group

For decades, special interest groups have assisted in the development of emerging technologies. As a group, a SIG explores boundaries faster than individuals working alone.

In his letter to the NYVRMLSIG the evening before the first meeting in January, 1996, Mark Pesce called the VRMLSIG a “barnraising in cyberspace.”

The NYVRMLSIG is a not-for-profit special interest group focusing on VRML and 3D on the Internet. The group consists of 150 members who are 3D artists, web designers, programmers, and people who are interested in 3D on the Internet.

The Goal of the NYVRMLSIG The NYVRMLSIG is a not-for-profit New York corporation dedicated to the following:
  1. Introducing and promoting the concept of navigable three dimensional (3D) space on the Internet;
  2. Disseminating information to interested individuals concerning new products and services available on the internet;
  3. Teaching interested individuals VRML, and the methods used to create 3D objects for use on the Internet; and
  4. Promoting the artists and developers who create VRML.

Project Promotion

The New York VRMLSIG's landmark project will provide a vehicle for promoting VRML through the remaining months of 1997 and the early part of 1998.

The SIG has an opportunity to create a strategic plan which will help build relationships with project sponsors, technology firms, schools and future clients. The finished landmark projects will also provide valuable prototypes or proof of technology samples which can be used to generate business in 1998.

Ideally, the landmark project will help SIG members explore potential business relationships with fellow SIG members and possibly provide a structure for a VRML development startup next year.

By creating a promotional plan that benefits project sponsors, the NYVRMLSIG also accrues benefits. By anticipating sponsor needs and building 3D worlds that meet these needs, we are creating a demand for VRML. Real projects will illustrate tangible benefits that can be measured.
