Chris St. John to demo vnet at SIGGRAPH and at the NYVRMLSIG July Meeting
===============================================================================
--forwarded from Chris St. John

vnet, a multiuser VRML chat
system. vnet is small and runs on nearly anything (including
some mac systems!) the original code was written by stephen f
white (see link below).

in a vnet-enabled world, you can see the avatars of other
users moving around in real time, and you can talk to them
using a chat dialog.

the vnet client runs in the user's web browser and downloads
automatically along with the wrl. no special software beyond a
a vrml plugin is needed. absolutely no technical knowledge
whatsoever is required, everything is completely automatic.

most interestingly, vnet is open source software. users are
free to download the server, and set up their own vnet
systems, even for commercial purposes.

i am interested in demo'ing vnet live, perhaps allowing some
remote users to participate in the sig meeting.

presumably, i would start with a (very short) presentation
about vnet, history, uses, technology involved, then let a
couple of people play with it, with the others viewing on the
projection screen, then finish up by answering any questions.

i think i can convince at least a couple people to be online
in the system during the meeting, so there should be some real
live remote users to interact with.

there are potentially some technical issues to work out,
since although vnet runs on pretty much anything, the law of
dog-and-pony shows says it will not run on whatever
network/machine is available at bell. i would need to confirm
that it really runs, since it would be a pretty boring
presentation if it did not.

two good vnet sites to check out are:

NYVRMLSIG's landmark project selected for the SIGGRAPH Web 3D Round-Up
======================================================================

Thanks to Linda Vigdor, the NYVRMLSIG made the application date for the
SIGGRAPH Web 3D Round-Up just in time and we were selected! (Out of 60
applicants, 30 were selected). Marjorie Stave will demo the landmark Web
site and Linda's Grand Central Terminal model in Orlando on Tuesday
evening, July 21st.

Here's the note from Timothy Childs:

---------- Forwarded message ----------
Date: Thu, 16 Jul 1998 01:34:16 -0700
From: Timothy Childs timothy@whowhere.com
Subject: Congratulations, you're in!

Congratulations! You have been selected for the SIGGRAPH Web 3D Round-Up!
This year's event has been the most difficult to judge yet since of the sheer
number of high quality demos to choose from.

The following message has all the details such as location, where to setup,
what to bring and what to expect. **We are strongly encouraging people to
bring their own laptops for their demonstrations.**

Time: Event Starts 6pm Tuesday July 21, 1998
(please note setup and prep times)
Location: Convention Center:
Valencia Ballroom 4th Floor next to the Electronic Theater.

Check in: When you arrive, please check in with the demo installation
coordinator. This person will be wearing a "coordinator" badge.

Release forms: You will be asked to sign a release for so you and your demo
can be recorded and/or broadcast at a future date. You must sign the form
or you will not be allowed to demo.

What to expect :
If you haven't attended or participated in a Demo SIG I've run before, you
are in for an interesting surprise. By watching the seconds tick away on the
on-screen clock, the audience will know exactly how much time you have left
for your demo. We are still determining how much time will be allotted to
each participant we will follow this message with another email informing
you of your allotted time limit.

Sticking to your time limit:
Make sure you stay within you allotted time limit. The audience will have
some very interesting ways to let you know when and if you go over time.
The audience will also be armed with "auditory feedback devices" to let you
know if they approve or disapprove of what you are showing them. So make
good use of this real-time feedback loop. I would like to encourage you to
please spend a little bit of extra time polishing up your presentation--the
audience will surely demonstrate its appreciation.

=====================================================================
-- forwarded from Paula Murgia

vSHOW just jumped another hurdle, we talked with NYU to give us official
permission to do the project. Our networking is almost complete (Vittorio
tweeked the java code so we can have at least 60 simple vrml avatars in
the space!) so soon you will have a networked chat to point to at the
landmark site.
